Colors of the desert

Colors of the desert

Desert X will visit the Coachella Valley through April 21st, an exhibition that fills the city of Palm Springs with art, mysticism, and color.

The most sought after art exhibition of the moment is back in the California desert after having 200,000 attendees in its last edition (2017). This year will not fall behind thanks to its international catalogue integrated by 19 artists.

The exhibition addresses topics that affect the planet, both environmental and political, represented in sculptures, pavilions, posters, and installations that show the elements of the desert, the connection with water, and the magic behind the arid plain.

Western Flag is one of the showings commanded by John Gerrard and recreates the site of the Lucas Gusher (the world’s first important oil discovery, Texas, 1901). The work uses digital simulation for an eternal flag made of smoke and “placed” over the finding.

Kathleen Ryan presents Ghost Palm, a reconstruction of the largest palm species in California, the Washingtonia Filifera. The artist’s version is made of steel, glass, and plastic; it is practically invisible to the naked eye and can only be appreciated when it captures sunlight, like frosted crystal.

Divided into the extremes of the Valley, Nancy Baker’s piece uses programmed reality to create a different experience for each spectator, thanks to the always-changing conditions of the desert. The exhibition shows the toxic outcome of human progress and the way in which it can lead to an environmental disaster.

Other artists expected to assist are: Iván Argote, Steve Badgett y Chris Taylor, Cecilia Bengolea, Pia Camil, Julian Hoeber, Jenny Holzer, Iman Issa, Mary Kelly, Armando Lerma, Eric N. Mack, Cinthia Marcelle, Postcommodity, Cara Romero, Sterling Ruby, Gary Simmons, and Superflex.
