The new Times Square in Taiwan

The new Times Square in Taiwan

The always avant-garde MVRDV architectural firm was chosen to develop the Taipei Twin Towers and fill Taiwan’s capital with light.

Its design is characterized by creating a vertical urban area made from blocks that can turn into interactive media to send, in a more artistic manner, any previously programmed message. The purpose: to become the Taiwanese Times Square and to position the city as the perfect one for tourism, shopping, and business.

The arrival at Taipei’s Main Station currently causes an anti-climax. The immediate area does not reveal the city’s charms or the quality that the Taiwanese metropolis has to offer. The towers will turn this area into the city center that Taipei deserves. –Winy Maas, Director and Co-founder of MVRDV

The project is meant to be located over the station and the plan is to erect the building on top of it, in order to blend the old and new sections and add offices, two movie theaters, and two hotels. Another fact Maas shared is that one of the project’s purposes is to allow people to climb up the cubes; also the intermediate space will be designed for social gatherings and will feature natural ventilation.
